why we do it
Breakthrough medical research has shown that regular physical activity offers enormous benefits cancer survivors. By exercising three to five hours a week, you can improve your odds of surviving breast cancer by as much as 50 percent, according to a landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2005. In 2006, a study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that colon cancer survivors who increased their levels of physical activity after their diagnosis reduced their odds of dying by 50% compared to survivors who remained sedentary. Exercise also improves your immune function, enhances feelings of well-being and self-confidence, revs up your energy level, increases your lean muscle mass, and builds bone density at the same time. The benefits of regular physical activity do not require you to go to hospital to get them or endure unpleasant, even debilitating, side effects. Nor do they require the pharmaceutical industry to manufacture them. Exercise doesn’t hurt, won’t make you lose your hair, or cause you to gain weight. It also prevents diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
Has your oncologist or your surgeon told you about these amazing benefits? If not, ask them. Every one of these health-enhancing effects has been documented in leading medical journals. It is never too late in the cancer journey to begun a program of physical activity. Let us help you!
